Our printers are used very heavily, and
we have had excellent luck with mid-range HP printers.
We do not recommend the smaller printers for office use since
they do not seem to hold up as well.

Our color printer is a Xerox
Workcentre C2424. Xerox has a unique program where they give you a free
printer if you meet certain usage commitments and buy ink
from them. This is a very good program. (Yes,
the ink is reasonably priced.) The printers are not
ink-jet, but use a special wax/ink printing process that provides

Our Software-As-A-Service (SaaS)applications all use remote
datacenter backups that require no effort by us or our clients.
For our internal applications and data we use both an in-house
disk drive and an Internet based service. All of these
solutions have the advantage of eliminating the need to juggle
tapes.

recommend that you install the latest version of the virus software
of your choice and that you keep the application and the
virus definition tables up to date. We have used
both Symantec Norton AV and Grisoft AVG and found both
of them to be fast and reliable.

Personal Firewall and Pop-up Blocker
|
ZoneAlarm provides a personal
firewall (especially recommended if you are using DSL, cable,
T1, or higher levels of Internet access) and a pop-up ad blocker.
These types of products can be problematic because they can
sometimes block things you want, but ZoneAlarm is relatively
easy to setup and can be turned on and off when needed.

Ad-aware
|
Ad-aware scans your memory, registry,
hard, removable and optical drives for known datamining, aggressive
advertising, and tracking components. It then lists the results
and offers to remove or quarantine the components. If
you run it on a regular basis you will be surprised at the
number of programs that are automatically loaded on your computer
without your permission as you work on the Internet.
It is important to keep this program up to date using the
Ref Update tool.

Spybot - Search and Destroy

"Search & Destroy can detect and
remove spyware of different kinds from your computer. Spyware
is a relatively new kind of threat that common anti-virus
applications do not yet cover. If you see new toolbars in
your Internet Explorer that you didn't intentionally install,
if your browser crashes, or if you browser start page has
changed without your knowing, you most probably have spyware.
But even if you don't see anything, you may be infected, because
more and more spyware is emerging that is silently tracking
your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile of you
that will be sold to advertisement companies."

CloudMark SpamNet is a utility that
works as a plug-in for Microsoft Outlook. It looks for
spam messages as they are loaded into Outlook and places them
in a Spam folder (or any folder you designate). It does
not catch all spam, but when new ones appear, you click
the "Block" button and it is removed (and a message is sent
to Cloudmark to allow them to update their database pf spam
signatures). Our experience is that it catches 80 -
90% of the spam we receive. (There is also a Whitelist
feature that helps cut down on false spam reports.)
